Amy Benson, Senior Counsellor

Loss is one of the most painful human experiences and baby loss comes with its own unique kind of pain. Having supported many parents through the loss of their baby, I know that this experience changes you; I know that the pain endures far longer and more intensely than most people recognise, and I know that its impact is felt in every area of your life – at work, in friendships, with parents and partners, and not least on your identity and sense of self.

As you take these first steps along a path you never wanted to be on, I can help you to process what you’re going through, to talk about your baby and what happened, to find ways to cope with the day-to-day, and – when you’re ready – support you as you re-engage with the world around you, all the while keeping the child you lost firmly at the heart of your healing.  Life will not always feel this heavy, you will know moments of joy again, and your pain will become more manageable. No matter what your situation, no matter what you say, and no matter what you feel, you will be met with compassion, patience and a sincere willingness to understand. Together we will find a safe path through this desperate time.

I have been working as a counsellor /psychotherapist since qualifying with a first-class honours degree in Integrative-Relational Counselling in 2009. Alongside my work for Petals at Guys & St Thomas’ Hospital in London, I run my own private general counselling practice in Surbiton and online. I really love my job and consider it a privilege to have the opportunity to build such enriching (for us both!) relationships with the people I work with.
